Tarbiyah Department

Personal development is the hallmark of MAS and individual members are our most valued and strategic assets.  MAS Tarbiya Department is tasked with the responsibility of developing MAS members, giving them the tools and knowledge to develop and help others around them grow, and empowering them with the necessary skills to fulfill the MAS mission.

The word “Tarbiya” is an Arabic word that linguistically means increase, growth, and refinement. Conventionally, Tarbiya means the development and the training of people in various aspects. The word is commonly used to describe the upbringing of children as the parents provide them with physical, educational, moral and spiritual needs to help them grow and become useful members of society.

MAS envisions that individuals will bring about real change in our society and therefore moving them towards the goal of constant self-development and development of those around them is absolutely essential.  MAS aspires to raise a generation of committed and disciplined Muslims who will spread the message of Islam and implement the Movement’s vision in all fields of Islamic work. In MAS Tarbiya means the systematic development and training of members and potential members. It is a continuous and comprehensive process of developing all aspects of the Muslim character/personality, i.e., spiritual, intellectual, moral, social, and physical.

The Tarbiya process goes beyond the level of individuals to the level of the group, trying to establish the elements of team spirit that Islam teaches such as love, brotherhood, and mutual trust.

Youth Department

MAS Youth (MY) is the department of the Muslim American Society (MAS) which serves young people throughout the United States. We believe that young Americans, with the right tools, skills, and knowledge, have the potential to bring about positive change in their communities.

We identify ourselves as a movement of American youth and young adults who aspire to answer the call of our Creator as put forward in the Divine Scriptures:

“And let there arise from among you a group of people inviting to all that is good and forbidding all that is evil. It is they who will attain true success.” (Qur’an 3:104)

We work with young people to inspire them to understand, apply, and advocate divinely ordained values in the service of the common good. Our core values are service, equality, and justice.

Our programs engage young people, ages 15 to 30, through educational, spiritual, recreational, and social activities. These programs are designed and run by the youth, with the guidance of mentors who share their experiences and provide valuable feedback…
